Walking along the coast brings a sense of freedom and wonder. The rapidly changing conditions and geometries that seem to play across the open space, hold my attention and create a sense of curiosity and wonder. I walk in the same places throughout the seasons – out on The Bay itself, and along the promenades and footpaths where the built environment meets with nature. I’ve been walking The Bay for as long as I can remember, yet shied away from painting it in the past as I felt the open space would be overwhelming. It is overwhelming – it shifts and changes, engulfs me and rips my breath away. The paintings were inevitable really, it just took me a while to find the right attitude with which to make them. I started this body of work in 2017 and look forward to seeing how it develops over time. The most recent work is shown first.
